Linden Postcard Show 2010Once again the winner of the Linden Postcard Show Bendigo and Adelaide Bank $5,000 award went to an artist who submitted just one work. Hana Rajkovic from Brisbane won the prize for her painting It's Like Peanut Butter. The work came about as a result of a story she heard from a friend. "... she came to live in Australia as a child and her mother bought Vegemite for breakfast as she heard it's a spread just like any other. She was spreading it in thick layers without tasting it before and gave it to her two children, both of them started crying and screaming but she didn't care, she thought they were just capricious, so she told them: "what, it's just like peanut butter!" I spent a long time thinking about this story, then I did several drawings and sketches of it before actually making it into this little painting." Rajkovic, who migrated to Australia last year from Serbia, plans to take her friend to dinner and buy "the largest jar of Vegemite there is to buy and put it in a place of honour at my home". Judges for this year's postcard were Megan Backhouse, art journalist The Age, Alex Baker, Snr Curator National Gallery of Victoria and Jane Scott, Director Tarra Warra Museum. The judges felt the work rewards closer viewing. "Funny and unlaboured, there is a beguiling lightness of touch in both the subject matter and palette" commented Backhouse. An international entry from Edinburgh Kate McGee's Run secured $1,000 worth of art materials from St Kilda Art Supplies while Roselee Firth went home happy with $2,000 courtesy Palais Theatre Management Artist Support award. A list of postcard winners will be available soon on this web site.
